Wimbledon Common

The Course

Beverley Brook, the Windmill and the Butts: the ground Oxford and Cambridge have raced over since 2000, and how to follow it.

Two routes, one Common

Out across the brook, up to the Windmill, home through the Butts.

All three races start and finish beside Thames Hare & Hounds’ headquarters. They share the opening miles and the run home; the Gentlemen add a long northern loop that takes them almost to Tibbets Corner and back.

This is cross country as it was meant to be: open grass, woodland tracks, uneven winter ground, climbs and a passage straight through Beverley Brook.

Course character

Four places to know

Every Varsity runner remembers these. Each one is marked on the course plan above.

Invariably the muddiest part of the course. Only a mile or so from the finish, the boggy ground saps the strength of the toughest runners.

Coming to watch?

The course loops back on itself, so one walk across the Common gives you several views of each race. Everything you need for the day is on the Races page.
